Pengenalan kepada perkembangan sosio-historis kesusasteraan Melayu moden, dari Munsyi Abdullah pada abad ke-19 hingga dekad-dekad awal abad ke-20. Signifikan pergerakan-pergerakan kesusasteraan dan ciri-cirinya akan dibincangkan, umpamanya institusi-institusi seperti Pejabat Karang Mengarang, Balai Pustaka, pergerakan-pergerakan seperti Pujangga Baru and Angkatan 45 semasa zaman pra-Perang Dunia II di Indonesia and Malaya. Wawasan dan gagasan kesusasteraan di kalangan kelompok-kelompok sastera, sasterawan-sasterawan penting dan perkembangan genre sastera akan dikaji dalam konteks semangat nasionalisme dan kebangkitan semula kebudayaan pra-Perang.
