Background
In 1986, prior to joining the National Institute of Education, Dr. Abbas Mohd Shariff was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for his contributions at various levels with the Ministry of Education. In October 1989 he was seconded to National Institute of
Education as a lecturer. As the year passed he gradually rose to various positions before being appointed as Assistant Professor in July 2000. He won the prestigious Merit Award for the "Teacher of the Year" awarded by Nanyang Technological University in 2004.
He has a PhD from Nanyang Technological University and a Master of Arts (Education) from the University of Hull, United Kingdom. He also holds a Certificate in the Teaching of Second Language from the University of Massey (New Zealand), a Certificate in Advanced Translation from the Regional English Language Center (RELC), Singapore, a Certificate in Islamic Studies from the Universitas Syeikh Yusuf, Indonesia, and a Doctorandus (Drs) in Indonesian Language and Literature from the National University of Indonesia.
Research and Teaching
Dr. Abbas’s research interests are in curriculum studies, Malay language and culture and Islamic studies.
Publications
As a Project Director (IRK) with the Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore (CDIS), Dr Abbas made significant contributions to the development of Islamic Religious Knowledge materials. Several IRK textbooks had been written under his guidance. His more recent publications include:
