Background
Mohamed Aidil Subhan joined the Malay Language Division of the Asian Languages & Cultures Academic Group in 2002 as a Teaching Fellow from Dunman Secondary School where he served as Subject Head (Malay). Previously, he was a Trainer at the Special Training Programme (STP) as
one of its pioneer batch of academic staff from 1997-2002. He started his teaching career in 1990 after graduating from the Institute of Education winning the Public Spiritedness and Service to IE Award. He was then posted to Shuqun Primary School from 1990-1993 becoming its Discipline Master before leaving to do his Bachelor of Arts in Malay Language at the University of Malaya. He graduated in 1997 and was posted to Fajar Secondary School as its Malay Language Co-ordinator before leaving in July to join STP. While serving as Teaching Fellow, he finished his Masters in Arts in the field of Malay Stylistics and is currently a Lecturer pursuing his PhD. from the Centre for Research In Pedagogy & Practice (CRPP), NIE in language planning and policy. Aidil is also the co-ordinator for In-Service Programmes and the Advance Diploma courses for Malay Language.
Research and Teaching
Aidil’s research interests are in language planning and policy, curriculum and pedagogy, and stylistics.
His Academic Exercise was on Communicative Language Teaching and he is now conducting in-service courses for the Ministry of Education as well as private and government-related agencies on communicative teaching approaches, co-operative learning techniques, differentiated learning instructions, Multiple Intelligences, task-based learning and storytelling approaches.
His MA thesis was on stylistics comparing short story writings of selected young writers from Malaysia and Singapore. He has conducted numerous workshops on creative writing, debating and oratorical skills for schools and Malay/Muslim organizations.
He is currently pursuing his PhD. on Bilingualism and Malay Language Planning. His current research looks into the 50-year history of bilingualism in Singapore since the All Party Report of 1956 and how it has had an impact on Malay language planning and policy. His research will also look into the future and chart the possible growth of Malay language for the next 50 years.
