Background
Associate Professor (A/P) Hadijah bte Rahmat is Deputy Head of the Asian Languages and Culture Academic Group and Head of the Malay Language Division. She joined the Institute in 1987. A/P Hadijah obtained her PhD in Malay and Indonesian Studies from the School of
Oriental & African Studies, University of London.
Research and Teaching
Her research interests are in Classical and Modern Malay Literature, Children’s Literature and Literature education, Islamic literature, Malay Historiography, Singapore Malay literature, Malay settlements and socio-cultural developments in Singapore.
Currently she is teaching the Malay Literature Pedagogy and Literature education modules for postgraduate and graduate students.

She has written 9 books, edited 11 books and published numerous academic papers in international journals. The following are some of her publications:
Her books are: Sastera dan Manusia Melayu Baru—Kumpulan Esei dan Wawancara (1998), Munsyi, a historical play based on autobiography of Munsyi Abdullah bin Sheikh Abdul Kadir (1998); Di Tengah Alam, anthology of poetry (1998); Antara Dua Kota—Mengesan Jejak-jejak Peninggalan Munsyi Abdullah di Melaka dan Singapura (1999); In Search of Modernity: A Study of the Concepts of Literature, Authorship and Notions of Self in ‘Traditional’ Malay Literature (2001), Mengukir Air Di Pesisir (2005); Kilat Senja—Sejarah Sosial dan Budaya Kampung di Singapura (2005) and Peranan dan Perkembangan Sastera Kanak-Kanak (2006).
