Background
Kartini joined the Malay Language Division of the Asian Languages & Cultures Academic Group in 2007 as a Teaching Fellow. She started her teaching career in 1999 after graduating from the National Institute of Education with a Distinction in Diploma in Education
(Malay Specialization). She was then posted to Boon Lay Garden Primary School from 1999-2001 before leaving to do her Bachelor of Arts (Education) in Malay Language and Literature at the Nanyang Technological University. She graduated in 2003 with Honours (2nd Class Upper) and was awarded the Singapore Malay Teachers Cooperative Ltd book prize as top student. She was posted to Bendemeer Secondary School before leaving in July 2007 to join NIE. Her Master of Arts thesis focused on the thoughts and authorship of Raja Ali Haji. Kartini aspires to pursue her PhD in Malay Literature.
Research and Teaching
Kartini’s research interests are in classical and modern Malay literature, Malay literary culture, Malay literary criticism and literary theories.
At NIE, she teaches Classical Malay Literature, The Teaching of Modern Malay Literature, Modern Malay/Indonesian Literature, Selected Readings in Malay Literature and the Teaching of Moral Education.
