Background
Abdul Rahman Napiah obtained his Ph.D from the Department of Malay Letters, National University of Malaysia in 1990. He became a lecturer at his alma mater before joining the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore in 2001.
Research and Teaching
Abdul Rahman’s research interest is in four fields: the development of Malay modern drama, Malay literary criticism, Islamic literature and literary theories. He was among the first researchers on modern Malay drama and the first to conceive and write about the Malay literary theory called Taabudiyah in 1986. A prolific writer, he has written more than 120 books in both academic and literary fields, including short stories, novels and dramas (plays for stage, radio and tv), literary critiques and books on literary theories.
At NIE he teaches Critical Theory, Children’s Literature and Modern Malay Drama.
